General Conduct. Instrumental students are expected to maintain a high standard of behavior during lessons. Key expectations include:
- Arrive approximately 10 minutes early for lesson.
- Begin blowing into your instrument to warm the instrument.
- Reeds should be soaking in a small prescription bottle with water.
- Be prepared with all necessary materials, including:
- Instrument in proper working condition
- Tuned prior to lesson, NOT during the lesson.
- Music binder with all required sheets for lesson.
- This should include all work required for any ensemble(s) you participate in.
- Pencil for notes.
- Notepad for expectations for next lesson.
- Conduct yourself respectfully toward other students, parents, and staff.
Specific Guidelines. To create an effective learning environment, students should adhere to the following guidelines:
- Posture and Position: Sit with proper posture and maintain a playing position throughout the rehearsal.
- Attention: Stay focused and avoid distractions. Speaking or playing out of turn is neither respectful of your Instructor, not of the lesson setting.
- Food, Drink, or Gum: No eating or drinking anything beyond water is permissible within 30 minutes of your lesson. Your instrument will thank you.
- Restroom Breaks: Use the restroom and drinking fountains before entering the rehearsal room; students should not leave the lesson environment during the time allotted for their lesson.
Responsibilities. Students must take responsibility for their own learning and equipment:
- Bring all required accessories, such as mutes, valve oil, reeds, cleaning accessories to your lesson.
- If unable to play your instrument, students must provide a signed note from a parent on the day of absence.
By following these expectations, students can contribute to a positive and productive rehearsal atmosphere, enhancing their learning experience and musical development.
